MISSISSAUGA—Infrastructure Ontario and provincial transit agency Metrolinx have picked a P3 partner to take on the Hurontario Light Rail Transit project.

The Mobilinx consortium was named the preferred proponent for the transit infrastructure work Aug. 26, though the province and the group of companies will need to reach financial close on the deal before it’s official. Infrastructure Ontario said it expects to lock in the design, build, finance and maintain contract this fall.

The new light rail system will include 19 stops, running along Hurontario Street from the Port Credit GO Station in Mississauga to the Gateway Terminal at Steeles Avenue in Brampton. The system’s light rail vehicles will run on dedicated lines and are expected to help ease gridlock in the two fast-growing cities just west of Toronto.

To secure its place as the preferred proponent, the Mobilinx team topped the Trillium Transit Partners in the request for proposals stage. According to Metrolinx, the final team shortlisted for the project –Hurontario Light Rail Connection Partners — did not submit their proposal before the deadline. In addition to the new light rail route, the contract covers the construction of a maintenance and storage facility for the rail cars to be located at Highway 407. After a change of scope to the project earlier this year, the estimated cost to build the LRT is $1.4 billion. The final price tag will be released once the parties reach financial close.

Further details about the construction timeline will also be available once the contract is signed this fall. Currently, the scheduled completion date is 2022.
